Laveno - Vararo

Distance: 4.3 km • Time: 1 ora e 30 minuti • Difficult

The route linking Laveno to Vararo is a walk deeply rooted in the traditions of the Laveno branch of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI). It is known by the curious name “Ammazzapanettone”, a humorous expression referring to the tradition of “working off” the rich Christmas panettone — a typical Italian holiday cake — through a post-holiday group hike.

The walk begins along the streets of Laveno, where the ascent starts by following the Anulare Valcuviano. Gradually, the town is left behind and a rather steep paved road is taken, leading to the hamlet of Monteggia. Continuing uphill, a barrier is reached; from this point onward, the road changes character, becoming cobbled and entering the woodland.

This section is pleasant and shaded, and leads to the area known as the Casere, where the Gigliola restaurant is located, an ideal spot for a break. After passing this small settlement, the route returns to an asphalt road and continues almost level, gently leading to the village of Vararo, the final destination of the walk.
