The Great Green Ring of Somma Lombardo is a circular route of about 25 kilometers that surrounds Somma Lombardo, in the heart of the Ticino Park.
While walking (or cycling), you continuously move from one environment to another: a stretch of dense woodland suddenly opens onto cultivated fields, a dirt road leads to a farmhouse, a path runs alongside green areas where nature is reclaiming its space.
It is precisely this variety that makes the route so interesting: there is no single landscape, but a continuous sequence of different scenery.
Starting from the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Ghianda, the Great Green Ring of Somma Lombardo route in a clockwise direction initially develops through rural areas leading towards Coarezza, crossing an open countryside landscape made up of secondary roads, cultivated fields, and quiet green stretches; from here, the itinerary gradually enters the more natural zone of the Ticino Park, where woodland and unpaved paths alternate with clearings and agricultural areas, until reaching the Maddalena area, a key waypoint along the route; after passing this section, and skirting the Diga del Panperduto.
The trail continues through scattered farmhouses and wide agricultural plains in the southern part of the loop, offering particularly scenic and relaxing stretches, then crosses the Strona Bridge and gently bends westward, passing again through wooded areas and rural landscapes near the Pollini marshes, which accompany the return towards the built-up area, until completing the loop and finally returning to the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Ghianda, the starting and ending point of this itinerary that combines nature, landscape, and territory into a single continuous route.
