Varese, land of events

From October 26, 2025, to March 29, 2026 | Castello di Masnago, Varese

Renato Guttuso al Castello di Masnago

On Saturday, December 13 at 11:00 AM, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art at Masnago Castle will present, with a new temporary display, Autumn Evening or Valpozzo, a painting signed by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, one of the most significant figures of the Italian Divisionist movement between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This initiative continues the Cultural Department’s commitment to highlighting true artistic treasures that enrich the exhibition path of the Masnago Castle museum spaces, offering visitors increasingly engaging and moving experiences.

The artwork will be placed in the Salone degli Svaghi at Masnago Castle, in a temporary exhibition area designed for an intimate and contemplative viewing experience. The setup has been carefully conceived to enhance the painting’s chromatic qualities and to appreciate the evolution of Pellizza da Volpedo’s Divisionist technique, of which he is one of the greatest exponents.

Created during the artist’s period of full artistic maturity, the painting captures with extraordinary poetic sensitivity the melancholic atmosphere of an autumn sunset, characterized by looser brushstrokes and predominant brown hues, in striking contrast with the lighter tones of the countryside sky. Once again, art and beauty bring light—even on the shortest day of the year.

The city of Varese celebrates one of the greatest masters of 20th-century Italian painting with an unmissable event:

the exhibition dedicated to Renato Guttuso at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Masnago Castle.

After the great success of previous editions, the artist—who had a close connection to the city—returns as the protagonist of a new exhibition, offering a unique opportunity to admire up close the painter’s masterpieces from the Francesco Pellin Foundation.
