From August until December, Sacro Monte di Varese is dedicating a rich programme of openings and free guided tours to contemporary art.
The indefatigable impulse given by Monsignor Pasquale Macchi, archpriest of Santa Maria del Monte, has ensured that works by some of the most important artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Renato Guttuso, Henri Matisse and Floriano Bodini, are housed at Sacro Monte.
This heritage can be admired not only in the Baroffio Museum and the Macchi Exhibition Centre in the First Chapel, but also in the village, the sanctuary and along the Viale delle Cappelle.

From the first week of August, a series of visits will allow visitors to get to know the collections and works created especially for Sacro Monte.

Guided tours of the Church of the Annunicata - which houses Trento Longaretti's extraordinary stained-glass window - and the Baroffio Museum collection, after the 7.30 a.m. Mass.

PAOLO VI AND MACCHI: FRIENDS OF ARTISTS

Guided tour of the Macchi Exhibition Centre's contemporary art collection at the First Chapel. The works bear witness to the great openness of Pope Paul VI and Bishop Macchi to the art of their time.

RENATO GUTTUSO AT SACRO MONTE

Renato Guttuso's presence at Sacro Monte marked the panorama of the Viale delle Cappelle with his mural of the "Flight into Egypt". The visit includes a viewing of the video made during the recent restoration of the work at the Exhibition Centre and a walk to the Third Chapel to admire the mural.

OPENINGS OF THE MACCHI EXHIBITION CENTRE

From 06 August to 31 December 2023, every Sunday from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., the Macchi Exhibition Centre at the First Chapel will be open and can be visited: an opportunity to get to know the collection housed inside and to receive information about Sacro Monte.
