Varese, land of experiences

Villa Panza and the Panza Art Collection

Surrounded by splendid gardens covering 33,000 sqm, Villa Panza overlooks the city of Varese from the hill known as Biumo Superiore. More than one hundred works of art by contemporary artists are displayed in the villa’s halls and large stables as well as priceless period furnishings and an important collection of African and pre-Columbian art. The outbuildings in the service wing have been completely transformed to house environmental artworks by Robert Irwin, Maria Nordman and James Turrell, who designed new installations especially to suit these spaces and experimented with colour and light. Next door the colours from neon light installations by Dan Flavin chase away any shadows that may have once lurked as they create new shapes with three-dimensional paintings within which to move and breathe.

I addition, since November 2022, Villa Panza has expanded its precious permanent collection thanks to a historic donation by Rosa Giovanna Magnifico Panza of a nucleus of 108 works by 26 European and American artists of contemporary art, hitherto part of the family's private collection. These newly added masterpieces provide a better insight into two of the collector's earlier phases of research: the phase between 1968 and 1976, which focused on minimal, conceptual, environmental art and light art, and the phase since 1986, which broadened artistic perspectives with organic art, the art of small objects and the art of colour. They are explored not only through works by new artists, but also through the integration of works by some already in the permanent collection of Villa Panza.
