An itinerary through the great UNESCO sites of the Varese area which, across different eras and landscapes, offers the opportunity to create a tailor-made journey through archaeology, nature, and spirituality, where Castelseprio, Isolino Virginia, the Monastery of Torba, Monte San Giorgio, and the Sacro Monte of Varese come together in a single, deeply evocative experience.
The Archaeological Park of Castelseprio and Isolino Virginia, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, tell the story of two very distant periods in the history of the Varese region.
In the first, nestled in the Olona Valley, the remains of the ancient Lombard castrum guide visitors through walls, towers, and religious buildings, leading to the Church of Santa Maria foris portas with its celebrated cycle of early medieval frescoes.
In the second, on Isolino Virginia in Lake Varese, traces of the earliest Neolithic communities are preserved, with evidence of prehistoric pile dwellings set within a unique natural environment.
Also included among the UNESCO sites of the territory are the Monastery of Torba, an ancient monastic complex surrounded by greenery and connected to the Lombard presence in the valley; Monte San Giorgio, renowned for its extraordinary fossil remains dating back more than 200 million years; and the Sacro Monte of Varese, with its famous devotional path and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte, immersed in a panoramic landscape between lakes and the Prealps.
An itinerary where history, archaeology, nature, and spirituality intertwine in a cultural experience rich in charm and atmosphere.
