A captivating route that combines nature, history, and archaeology, following the riverbanks and exploring gentle morainic hills.
The hike begins at the Spiaggia della Melissa, a green meadow along the Fiume Ticino, just a short distance from the town of Sesto Calende. After parking nearby, the trail follows the river across open grassland before climbing gently to reveal the Diga della Miorina.
A short distance beyond, a wide path leads toward Monte Gagliasco, a low morainic hill covered with chestnut, Scots pine, and oak trees. After crossing a broad clearing, you reach one of the highlights of the route: the Necropoli di Monsorino, dating back to the ancient Golasecca civilization.
Here, distinctive circular stone structures (cromlechs) enclose one or more burials, offering a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric times. From this point, the trail continues along a pleasant loop around the hilltop.
Along the way, you’ll pass a narrow valley carved by water over centuries—a wild and evocative feature where extra care is needed due to unprotected edges. Returning to the necropolis, the path descends once more toward the dam, completing the loop and bringing you back to the starting point.
