For a pleasant walk or a truly refreshing swim, the lake is one of the most loved destinations for four-legged friends. Here are all the tips on where to go and which spots not to miss!

Dog-friendly beaches


  • Lago Maggiore

Maccagno – All swimming beaches are accessible to dogs, which must be kept on a leash or muzzled if off-leash.

Brezzo di Bedero – The three swimming beaches are accessible to dogs.

Luino – The main town on the Lombard shore of Lake Maggiore. You can enjoy relaxing moments strolling through the town and have fun on the beaches and along the lakeside with your dogs. Dogs must be kept on a leash.

Porto Valtravaglia – A lakeside town surrounded by the greenery of the nearby Valtravaglia mountains. Dogs are allowed on the lakeside and beaches if kept on a leash. The only beach not accessible to dogs is the one in front of Piazza Imbarcadero.

Sesto Calende – Lisanza – Dogs are allowed on the lakeside and beaches if kept on a leash. For more details, see the link at the bottom of the page.

Ispra – Dogs are allowed on the lakeside and on non-equipped beaches, but they must be kept on a leash.

Angera and Ranco – La Nocciola – Featuring a large grassy area, partly shaded, this beach has a more "wild" nature and is accessible to four-legged friends. Steep access; beach is not equipped.



Lago di Lugano

  • Porto Ceresio – Overlooking the shores of the lake, it is ideal for a walk. Dogs are allowed along the lakeside and on the beaches, but only if kept on a leash.

Lago di Monate

  • Brusa Walking Trail (Osmate) – A great opportunity for a relaxing walk with your dog; dogs are allowed on a leash.
  • La Playa (paid beach) – Cadrezzate – Dogs are allowed on a leash and can swim, with no additional cost.
  • Dogs Beach – Via Mascagni, Travedona Monate – Along the shores of Lake Monate, this beach is entirely dedicated to dogs.
  • Il Larice Club (paid beach) – Cadrezzate – Dedicated areas for dogs to swim are available. Reservation for the dog area is required.
  • Comabbio Beach (formerly Spiaggia dei Preti) – Paid entry; from Monday to Friday, dogs are allowed on a leash. Well-behaved dogs are welcome.
  • Camomilla Beach Club (paid beach) – From Monday to Friday, the beach is accessible to well-behaved dogs in designated areas. Dogs must be kept on a leash, and owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs. Dogs are not allowed on weekends or holidays.
  • Travedona Monate Beach – Dogs are allowed along the entire designated stretch.

Lago di Varese

  • There is a 28 km cycling path around the lake that is accessible to dogs.

  • Lido di Bodio – Accessible to all dogs, which must be kept on a leash and muzzled if necessary.


Every year, the ASL conducts an analysis of the bathing waters. Refer to the annual report for information on bathing water approval.


 Restrictions along the lakeshore and on the beaches, in accordance with general rules concerning hygiene and the protection of public safety.
