The Flowering Coast - the Lombard side of Lake Maggiore
The entire Lombard side of Lake Maggiore runs from Sesto Calende to Locarno, Switzerland. The Lombard section is just over 60 km long and can be a taste of this side of Lake Maggiore.
With so many lakes dotted across the province of Varese it is no wonder the area offers unlimited ways to spend marvellous lake-weekends in Varese. Find your perfect place among the tiny fisherman villages along the lombardy shore of Lake Maggiore, or rent a bike to discover the coast of lake Varese. If you prefer the less known places, move to Valganna, a green valley situated not far from the Swiss border: over there you’ll find the small lake of Ghirla, surrounded only by real nature.
The Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso
Clinging to the rock overhanging, in one of the deepest points of the Verbano, the Hermitage is a monastic structure composed by the fusion of three chapels. Art and history are perfectly integrated in one of the most striking natural scenery, constituting a balcony that extends to the Borromeo Gulf, Stresa and the Borromean islands. Legend has it that it was Alberto da Besozzo who founded the hermitage in the 12th century, in honor of Saint Catherine of Egypt, whom he had invoked during a shipwreck on the Major.
