TRENITALIA:
It is possible to travel on trains with your pet. Small dogs are allowed free of charge in first and second class on all categories of trains and in the service levels Executive, Business, Premium, and Standard. You may bring only one carrier (70x30x50 cm). Additionally, each passenger is allowed to travel with one dog of any size, provided it is on a leash and wears a muzzle. For traveling with dogs, you must have the dog’s registration certificate in the canine registry and its health booklet (or, for dogs belonging to foreign citizens, the “dog passport” instead of both documents):
- on IC and ICN trains in both first and second class;
- on regional trains, except during the hours from 7:00 to 9:00 on weekdays, Monday to Friday;
- On Frecce and Intercity trains, you can purchase a ticket for your dog for only €5 to travel from Sunday to Friday, and €1 to travel on Saturday;
- On regional trains, you can purchase a dog ticket, equal to a second-class ticket for the journey at 50% of the standard fare.
Each passenger may travel with a dog of any size, as long as it is on a leash, wears a muzzle, and has the corresponding dog ticket for the intended journey:
- on Intercity and Intercity Night trains in both first and second class; in sleeping cars, couchette cars, and Superior cabins for compartments booked entirely;
- on Frecciabianca, Frecciarossa, and Frecciargento trains, in first and second class and service levels Executive, Business, and Standard. Excluded: Premium service, Silence Area, Meeting Area, and lounge areas;
- on all regional trains, except for those specifically indicated in the official timetable.
Assistance dogs travel free of charge on all trains without any obligations.
For assistance dogs, only a training certificate is required, issued on letterhead (or with a readable stamp) by a recognized dog training center or institution, certifying that it is a service dog, to be shown upon request to the train staff. For guide dogs accompanying visually impaired passengers, no certification is required.
