The Palio dei Castelli was born on September 16, 1972 on behalf of a "handful" of Castiglione's lovers, with the precise intent of making known, divulging, appreciating the history of Castiglione Olona, a unique, centuries-old history; a history capable of acting as the plot of the event. 

During the re-enactment, the historical procession composed of more than 250 figures in period costumes and expert flag-wavers, parade through the streets of the Borgo. Skilled bottari, divided among the eight Rioni, roll barrels in an exciting race through the medieval streets to Monteruzzo Castle to win the coveted banner.

In each edition, the Palio, painted by a different artist, represents the historical theme of the year and the eight contending districts. With the barrel race, the Pro Loco Castiglione Olona is associated with the Italian Federation of Historical Games.
