Walking through Mills and Country Farms

Walking through mills and country farms  (2 days / 1 night )

  • 1st day - Monteviasco - Piero's mills

Meeting with our expert hiking guide and departure for the upper Varese area where we will enjoy a fantastic walk in the Veddasca valley that offers beautiful landscapes. A trekking route to climb up to Monteviasco, one of the most remote and hidden corners of our Region, an inhabited village where cars do not arrive ... With a path along the steps of a magnificent mule track that still today constitutes the main access in the village, we will spot waterfalls, huts and small mountain pastures surrounded by the colors of unspoiled nature.
We will reach the village with the stone houses and the wooden balconies, absorbed in the tranquility, peace and the splendid panorama.
A typical mountain lunch will be served
In the afternoon the descent will begin passing through the PIERO’S MILLS where the landscape is enchanting and the unspoiled nature: the mills, built during the eighteenth century, used to grind wheat and restored in 1997, tell us about the way of living and building the past time.
Overnight at the Hotel and typical dinner.

  • 2nd day - Strolling in the countryside

Breakfast at the hotel and then, always in the company of the expert hiking guide, we will start a fascinating Trekking route through the countryside to discover traditions that are still so deeply alive as to create close link between countryside and city.

The first town we will meet will be Caravate, a small urban center protected by the sloping hills towards Lake Maggiore, surrounded by greenery from which unexpected landscape ideas can be seen and where you can grasp the charm of simple things.

Walking along the suggestive countryside where the placid river Viganella flows, we will cross an uncontaminated countryside that at the beginning of the 1900s already boasted of important presence of artisanal and agricultural activities, as evidenced by some mills still functioning today, an oil press, a hydraulic sawmill, a continuous fire furnace and brick factories. There are many mills in this portion of the Province of Varese (such as the Mulino dei Frati) that in 1700 began to be built next to the farmhouses for grinding rye, wheat and other cereals.
Lunch will be served in a restaurant to enjoy simple cuisine with genuine flavors: not only good food and health, but also the rediscovery of cultural traditions and sociability, important components of the well-being of a community where agriculture is everything. You will then resume the journey, visiting some farms where you will have the opportunity to buy cold cuts, cheeses, yogurt, fruit and vegetables directly.
