Since the Middle Ages, the hills in and around Angera, on Lake Maggiore, are well knonw for their wineyards: in those times many local families, included the Borromeo Family, started to grow grapes for wine that in the 17th century arrived also to Rome.
Today wine is still produced on those hills and since 2005 it has been protected under the brand name of origin I.G.T. Ronchi Varesini.
